Costco Carting

So I went to Costco yesterday. After I was done buying a huge box of diapers and eating some pizza with my kids, I left the supercenter and pushed the gigantic cart to my mom van, unloaded the goods, buckled the kids in and then there it was...

...the cart.

I usually try and park near one of the cart return things because I feel like a jerk leaving it in the middle of the parking area. But yesterday I was at Costco, and ya know, I just don't think they have cart return things anywhere in their parking lots...yeah, thats it.

So I put my cart in between my van and the car next to me, and felt like such a loser doing it, especially when this guy walked by and totally gave me the stink eye. But here's the deal, I feel like if I leave my kids in the car while I walk ALL the way over to return the cart that someone is going to either steal my kids or steal my van, or steal my groceries or steal my kids and groceries and my van all at once.

See! I can't return that cart! BAD things will happen!

And there's my dilemma. I think they should put a sensor or something on them and have them return automatically, how about that?!

So do you always return your cart?

  2. I do on a very regular basis. I am a better human being than you.

(Haha, just kidding. I'm not a good person, typically.)

  3. I am a 85%-er in about everything I do, which includes returning carts.

  4. I totally agree with you. I can't leave my kids in the car! So Iactually try to park really close to a cart return. Seriously. Because I feel so guilty just leaving the cart where it is. . .

  5. My little demon has a habit of turning off the computer whenever I'm trying to comment on blogs. One of his more annoying habits.

Anyway, I usually go shopping with my hubby, so I make him return the cart (as well as carry all the groceries up to our second floor apartment). He is great like that. On those rare occasions that I do go shopping on my own, I try to park next to a cart return. If I forget. I will either deposit my groceries in the car, re-lock the car, go (with Bug) to return the cart, then carry Bug back the car. OR I just leave the cart. They pay people to go gather the carts anyway. I figure since I'm giving them business, they shouldn't mind too much.

  6. I usually pray someone will take the van and the kids and leave the groceries behind! I do take the cart back...it's the only way I can get into the celestial kingdom.

  7. I always park near a cart return so I can always return my cart.
When I was younger I witnessed cart go screeching through the parking lot and slam into this guys car. Seriously slammed, it bounced off it hit so hard. I felt horrible that I watched the whole thing and didnt run after it (I was 12 and took the 2 kids I was babysitting to the grocery store across the street for a treat--I couldn't leave them on the side and run.) I think it scarred me for life. Seriously. Haha. :)

  8. I also try to park by the cart return, otherwise I just stash it somewhere it won't roll into another car, like the flower bed. Bad, I know.

Love this post, especially the part about the pizza. YUM!

  9. I'm a failure as a human being because like a lot of the other commenters, if I'm not near a cart return, then I just don't bother. I stick it where it won't bump any other cars and call it good. But I do think it's super lame when someone's near a cart return and they still don't return the cart. No one do that, okay?

  10. I always return my cart and all the other ones that people don't if it is in my path to the return. My car has dings and scratches all over it from the shopping carts and it makes me mad every time I see them on my doors.
If I were going to steal a car though, I would definitley make sure it was one that had '0' kids inside. I can barely handle my own, I wouldn't want someone elses....the car is just not worth it.

  11. Hey, Melinda! I just stopped by to let you know I'm not blogging right now. Well, I'll be posting once a week b/c of my BlogHer contract but it's not like I'll expect anyone to read it b/c I am not reading anyone else right now. I haven't seen you around my blog in a while (sob!) and so I wanted to make sure you knew it was nothing personal. LY! H

  12. I had the same dilemma when my kids were babies!!! I would feel horrible just leaving the cart there... but in my mind, it was either the cart or my kids and the car and the groceries! The latter always won!

so YES I've done it before! lol!

  13. Nope, I hardly ever return my cart unless I'm shopping alone. i don't like leaving my kids in the car alone while I hunt for the little silver aisle-way slot for all those darned carts. I've never been spanked yet for not returning carts, although I've lived through some serious bad looks.

  14. MOST of the time I do return it, mainly because I like to drive around and around the parking lot in circles until I finally spot an available spot next to the cart return. That said, one day it was STORMING (like I thought we were the next Hurricane Katrina) and so I left the cart and jumped into my car to speed home. As I backed up, I saw a fragile, little old lady feebly pushing her cart and I felt like a monster. So, of course, I HAD TO park my car again and return both my cart and hers. It was horrible.
